MindSET Resources
Overview:
GatorTRAX is part of the larger national MindSET program, run by Tau Beta Pi.
MindSET (Math, Science, Engineering, and Technology) sets standards and goals for activities with students.
These activities must first and foremost be mathematically oriented. They cannot simply teach qualitative applications
of engineering concepts, but must seek to quantitatively teach mathematical concepts. The goal is to help students reach
Algebra I by eighth grade and calculus by senior year.
The purpose of this page is to provide sample activities that GatorTRAX has done. Most of our activities are produced
by teaming up with other engineering societies on the University of Florida campus. Each of the pdf's that are
uploaded to this page will seek to give credit to both GatorTRAX and the societies we team up with. Other
MindSET-affiliated chapters are hereby granted permission to print and use our activities provided that the any
markings that give credit to those who created the activity are not concealed or tampered with.
Additionally, societies are welcome to use our activities as inspiration for writing your own. If you create an activity
based on one of ours, or if you improve on one of our activities, we ask that you send us a copy of your new activity.
This is strictly for the purpose of helping us to continue improving our program by taking your suggestions and
applying them to our own activities.
Documents:
Each of the documents uploaded will generally fall into one of several categories. At any given session, we typically
offer an
introductory activity for elementary students, an
intermediate activity for middle-school students, and an
advanced activity for high-school students. As often as possible, we will also strive to provide a detailed
materials list for the hands-on portion of the activity as well as
mentor evaluations, which are
suggestions made by the engineering students who administered the activity once the activity was completed. These
evaluations will include suggestions for improvement, tricky spots that they ran into, and other such words of wisdom.
Finally, please note that unless explicitly stated otherwise,
these documents are NOT finalized but are instead
intended to serve as drafts. We do our best to make these documents in accordance with MindSET standards, but none
of these will be considered finalized until they are reviewed and approved by Tau Beta Pi national headquarters.
